▶ MOOD & INSPIRATION
I had two red, textured, and intense backgrounds created in my signature technique, and for a long time I hesitated to use them. Have you ever felt that some colors are difficult for you, while others you absolutely love? For me, I love blue and green, and I’ve learned to appreciate and work with brown and gray, but red has always been a challenging color. For a while, I strongly associated it with aggression. So for me, it became a real artistic challenge to «redirect» this color into something more peaceful. In this diptych, I softened the red by introducing gray, raspberry, and light blue tones. This is how I perceive the calm yet powerful energy of a sunset in nature, how red shimmers across the intricate forms of tropical flowers. I was very happy with the result, and I would love to continue exploring ways to «tame» red in my work.

▶ ABOUT THE «JUNGLE» SERIES
This artwork belongs to the «JUNGLE» series, exploring different moods and impressions of the tropical world. It reflects both the vibrant energy of tropical plants and the quiet, refreshing stillness of an exotic garden.

▶ ART PAINTING TECHNIQUE
I work in a unique oil-on-water paper technique, where fluid oil-based pigments are guided across the surface of water and then carefully transferred onto fine art paper. Each sheet is created individually, making every pattern completely unique and naturally formed.
These textured papers become the foundation of my mixed media compositions. I use them as a base layer and further develop the artwork through collage and painting.
Final details and expressive elements are painted by hand with acrylics, combining spontaneous natural patterns with controlled artistic refinement.

▶ HANDMADE LACE ELEMENT
In this work, I use handmade lace that I crochet myself from cotton threads. For each piece, I carefully create a lace motif that resonates with the composition and mood.
To prepare the lace for mixed media use, it is straightened while wet, fixed to a surface, and delicately painted with acrylics. This allows the lace to hold its shape while preserving the natural texture of the threads, making it an integral part of the artwork.

▶ ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mariia Raskin (b. 1979, Kazakhstan) is a mixed media painter based in Turkey and Northern Cyprus. She holds a degree with distinction in Applied Arts. Her works are part of the permanent collection of the Cyprus Modern Art Museum.
A member of the International Association of Art (IAA) and the Eurasian Art Union (EAU), she is a recipient of international art awards including the Luxembourg Art Prize and the Boynes Monthly Art Award. Her works have been exhibited internationally.
