I wanted to capture the dramatic instant when a Native American warrior, riding swiftly across the Southwest, suddenly discovers that the trail ahead is blocked by steep cliffs and becomes nearly impossible to pass. He pulls hard to bring his horse to an abrupt stop, sending dust and stones into the air. I used strong directional composition and energetic brushwork to convey momentum, tension, and the force of the sudden halt. The warm reds and oranges of the earth contrast with the cool blue sky, while the vast, quiet canyon in the distance intensifies the drama of this split-second decision.
