Stone Standing Still Among Green (2011) Photograph by sangwon jeon

A stone pagoda stands in the courtyard of Unmunsa Temple in Cheongdo, North Gyeongsang Province, its weathered tiers rising from a broad lawn with the surrounding mountains fading into haze behind it. Faint reliefs of guardian figures are carved into the pagoda's base, softened by centuries of exposure until they read more like suggestion than image. A low red lattice fence rings the pagoda, more ceremonial boundary than barrier, while peonies bloom untidily in the grass nearby. Further back, the temple's wooden halls sit low and unassuming beneath tiled roofs, their painted panels of blue and gold offering the only strong color in an otherwise soft, green scene. What holds my attention is the pagoda's stillness against everything alive around it — grass that will be cut, flowers that will fade, a mountain wrapped in shifting cloud — while the stone itself simply continues, unmoved by any of it. Printed on fine art paper. Sold unframed; ready to mount or frame as preferred.
