Still life (2026) Original Oil Painting by Stanislava Cherkasova

This still life is not really about objects, but about time itself. I wanted to explore how time settles onto things much similar to the way patina forms on old metal. I worked with heavy impasto, building up layer after layer, letting the texture lead its own life. At some point the paint stopped being means and became the subject itself - ridges, craters, accumulated matter that exists independently of whatever lies beneath. It feels related to what time does to memory: it erases the borders between things, blurs the edges until separate moments fuse into a dense, monolithic mass. Details dissolve and only occasional flashes of color survive. The days that make up a life do something similar, they press together, layer upon layer, losing their individual edges, becoming this heavy, unified thing that fills you from within with a dim, quiet glow.
