St Peter's Basilica, Vatican City (2025)Oil painting by Nick Pike

60 x 60 x 4cm (unframed)

£890

I didn't intend this to be a religious artwork but certainly think it has a spiritual edge - whilst painting, I felt that the crowd were being drawn up to the sky, with the figures atop Bernini’s colonnade guiding them.

I used silicone colour shapers as opposed to paintbrushes or palette knives for the first time, which gave the painting a spontaneity I intended and effectively blurred the large gathering to appear as a single entity.

Materials used:

Sponges, gesso and silicone colour shapers
