When creating Spirit of the West, I wanted to capture more than just the cowboy’s appearance—I aimed to convey his resilience and quiet strength. I used bold, expressive brushstrokes to shape his face, emphasizing strong contours without rigid details, allowing viewers to feel the rugged and heroic essence of the Western spirit.
In terms of color, I employed a contrast between warm and cool tones, using a cooler background to make the warmth of his skin stand out, enhancing the depth and three-dimensionality of the portrait. The white cowboy hat serves as the visual focal point, and I used dynamic brushstrokes to depict the texture and interplay of light and shadow on its surface. This hat is not just an accessory; it symbolizes freedom, adventure, and identity.
Overall, my goal was to create a piece that exudes strength yet retains subtle emotions, allowing the viewer to connect with the soul of the cowboy through the movement of the brushstrokes and the interplay of colors.
