Speckled Sussex Hen (2014) Original Painting by Fiona Plaisted

I'd never seen a Sussex speckled hen before I painted this mixed media canvas but I fell in love with her speckled colouring. I've painted her in amongst lavender flowers and enjoyed building up the layers with various papers, paint and buttons.

I start the canvas with a rough pencil sketch and then I add the coloured paper before building up the layers with acrylic paint. The last thing I add are the embellishments of thread, beads, buttons and glitter to pick out or highlight certain areas.
