Artwork description
New Zealand, 2002. The South Island.
The train tracks go on forever.
Two steel rails converge on the horizon, pulling the eye — and everything else — straight toward the snow-capped wall of the Southern Alps, brilliant white against a sky of impossible blue. Telegraph poles mark time down the right side of the frame. The dry tussock grass hums in the silence. Nothing is coming. Nothing is going. And yet the whole image is pure forward motion.
I never feel lost when I don't know where I'm going.
This is a panoramic image, two frames wide — part of a series Gary shot between the late nineties and 2010, on a journey through both islands of New Zealand. Captured on a Leica M6 with Kodak Portra NC film, it carries the tonal richness and quiet grain of analogue photography at its finest.
All of Gary's work is captured full frame, exactly as the scene appeared. Nothing is cropped, nothing is manipulated. What you see is what was there.
Each print is made entirely by hand in Gary's own studio, on Hahnemühle Bamboo archival paper — chosen for its exceptional tonal range and environmental credentials.
Every stage, from camera to finished print, is carried out by Gary himself. Never outsourced. Always personal.
