Somnium I begins a ten-part series at the threshold of sleep. The face is shown in extreme close-up, cropped away from ordinary identity; dark lips and descending marks anchor it while much of the surrounding paper remains exposed. Brown washes gather, stain and dissolve rather than describe, giving the portrait the instability of an image remembered on waking. Somnium — Latin for dream — is treated here not as fantasy, but as an inward state in which the body remains visible while certainty loosens.
