This is a peg solitaire board from Kenya, carved from soapstone in the shape of a fish, which I keep in my living room. The inspiration for this piece came from a fleeting moment, a low sun casting intriguing shadows across the board that immediately caught my attention and inspired me to take a reference photo.

This painting focuses on the board itself, highlighting the warm orange-brown tones of the soapstone alongside the vibrant, shifting shadows. The background is kept minimal, rendered in a soft bluish-grey, allowing the subject and its interplay with light to remain the central focus.

This still life is a testament to finding beauty in the ordinary, transforming a simple board game into a striking work of art.
