Snacks on the go! 2013
Subheading: Som tam? Strawberries?
Acrylic colour on handmade Thai mulberry paper (kada sa), deckled edge, 21.5 x 31 in., 55 x 80 cm.
Things that drew me to this scene from my photos are the body language and the outpouring of food items which makes up the foreground of this scene. This is another moment captured at Jatujak weekend market in Bangkok.
Here I left plenty of bare paper, so one can see the parchment type paper, unbleached, textured. There are visible pencil lines that form part of the background crowd for that sketching feeling contrasting nicely with the more embellished subject .
The paper I use is a traditional mulberry paper handmade in Thailand. It is a thick parchment paper, strong yet pliable. I have the paper made to this size to get the deckled edges which adds to the textural effect.
The close up pictures are to get a better feel for the texture and brush strokes of the painting. Then there’s the work in progress, and me with the painting for perspective.
