The name mockingbird refers to any of the passerine New World birds belonging to the family of the Mimidae. The common, or northern, mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), the most easily found in North America, is a medium-sized songbird known to be a mimic. It can imitate the song of other birds or even the sounds of some insects and amphibians. Mockingbirds have small heads, a long, thin bill with a hint of a downward curve, and long legs and tail. Usually grayish above and whitish below, their white-patched short and round wings make their tail seem even longer in flight. Their occasional nocturnal singing habits and their aggressive chasing off intruders on their territory (even human intruders!) causes them not to be welcome for some people, notably gardeners, as they thrive in suburban areas, but their rich, melodious and long-continued song makes them also one of the favored birds in North America.
