In this butterfly triptych, I used lace that I hand-crocheted from cotton thread. I wanted to convey a feeling of warmth, coziness, and something deeply familiar, like visiting your grandmother’s home. The lace adds a special charm and delicate, airy quality to the butterflies’ wings, making them feel both gentle and intimate.

▶ ART PAINTING TECHNIQUE
I work in a distinctive mixed-media technique: first, I create a rich, textured oil background on paper, then I paint the details with acrylics and add collage elements (cotton lace) to enhance depth and expression. There is a specific technical process involved to make the lace sit beautifully on the butterflies’ wings. Before incorporating it into the artwork, I straighten the lace by stretching it on a firm surface while it is wet, then paint it with acrylics to fix its shape.

▶ ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mariia Raskin (b. 1979, Kazakhstan) is an abstract-impressionist painter based in Turkey and Northern Cyprus. She holds a degree with distinction in Applied Arts. Her works belong to the permanent collection of the Cyprus Museum of Modern Art, and she has held several solo exhibitions in Cyprus, including one opened by the Prime Minister.
A member of the International Association of Art (IAA) and the Eurasian Art Union (EAU), Mariia is a two-time recipient of the Certificate of Artistic Achievement from the Luxembourg Art Prize and winner of the Boynes Monthly Art Award. Her artworks have been exhibited internationally and featured in well-known art publications and platforms. On Artfinder, Mariia exclusively presents her works on paper.
