Original artwork description
The work consists of sixteen modules that may be hung edge-to-edge, yet the intended spacing evokes a window grid through which we look at the city. A metropolis shimmers in fog/fire/heat-haze, overlaid with plant silhouettes. They are fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium)—the “weed of ruins” that became one of the first species to colonise London’s bombsites during WWII. The interplay of architectural pixels and botanical imprints speaks to place-memory and life’s capacity to push through trauma. Today, Ukraine moves in a similar rhythm of destruction and renewal; the gaps between modules become breaths, traces of loss, and openings for new growth. This cycle is a window onto a future where wounds heal and ruins take root.
The piece will be presented at the artist’s solo exhibition at the Taras Shevchenko National Museum in Kyiv, 18 September – 12 October 2025.
