I painted this scene after noticing the colors of the sky one evening in Sapporo. The last warm yellow light of dusk was still glowing near the horizon, while lavender clouds were slowly spreading across the sky above it. That contrast between the deep warm light and the cool violet tones was what first caught my attention and made me want to paint it.

The lavender color of the clouds subtly echoes through the rest of the scene — in the sky, in the distant buildings, and even in the soft shadows on the ground. Twilight has a way of changing familiar streets, and for a short time everything takes on these quiet, muted colors.

What I like about this street is the web of utility poles and wires stretching across the sky. They create a rhythm of lines that leads the eye through the neighborhood and give the scene its character. The buildings and cars are kept loose and simple in watercolor, so the atmosphere of the evening light remains the focus.

This painting is my attempt to capture that brief moment of transition between day and night, when the city grows calmer and the sky holds both the warmth of the fading sun and the cool colors of approaching night.
