When creating this painting, I wanted to express a dialogue across time: a newly commissioned granddaughter, standing in uniform before her grandfather’s grave, saluting him. Her salute is not only a tribute to her grandfather but also a continuation of the family’s spirit. I depicted the grandfather’s figure in a semi-transparent form, facing his granddaughter with a solemn salute, symbolizing the inheritance of bloodline and belief. The whole scene conveys solemnity with warmth, inviting viewers to reflect on kinship, honor, and sacrifice.

In technique, I used realism to capture details such as the texture of the uniforms, facial expressions, and the engraved name on the gravestone, to enhance authenticity. I employed contrasts in tone: the grandfather rendered in grayscale to emphasize his ethereal presence, while the granddaughter’s bright blue uniform represents vitality and responsibility. The cemetery background and serene sky add depth and calmness, centering the focus on the mutual salute between two generations of soldiers.
