Original artwork description
Saaler See V is part of my ongoing series about Lake Saaler—a tranquil natural refuge in my homeland that I have been visiting time and again for many years. It is places like this that remind me why I paint landscapes. In an age when unspoiled nature is becoming increasingly precious, I see painting as an act of mindfulness and connection.
On this summer day, I was captivated by the interplay between the mighty tree on the shore, the calm water, and the soft light, which made the landscape appear almost weightless. The reflective water’s surface dissolves the boundary between reality and reflection, creating a space that describes less a specific place than a sense of stillness and resonance.
Using transparent glazes and the characteristic luminosity of watercolor, I seek not only to capture the visible landscape but also to make its atmosphere tangible. Light becomes the true subject here—it connects trees, water, and air, and lends the painting its calm, meditative presence.
My works arise from an awareness of solastalgia—the sadness over the progressive loss of familiar natural spaces. That is why my landscapes are not nostalgic idealizations, but rather invitations to perceive the beauty and vulnerability of our natural environment anew.
