Original artwork description
British colonialism in India was absolutely devastating. According to The Economic Times in just forty of the two hundred years that the British ruled India, deaths that the colonisers are responsible for can easily surpass all famines in the Soviet Union, Maoist China and North Korea combined. The number even surpasses the deaths from both the world wars , including the Nazi holocaust.
I wanted to show how this cruelty fuelled by racism and greed still impacts today as people fight unbearable poverty. The background shows painted images of Queen Victoria who was the figurehead for all this greed as well as a small Indian child crippled through poverty and famine.
