I made Rooted by the Sea with Sea Campion in mind—those little white flowers you sometimes spot on clifftops and rocky beaches. I was trying out different floral shapes (too many daisies can be a habit!) and this one just clicked. Like my other recent pieces, it’s all cut by hand from painted collage paper, layered over a soft, sea-inspired background with drawn lines and stencilled texture. The process is a bit fiddly, especially with all the tiny shapes, but it’s so satisfying seeing it all come together. I wanted it to feel like you’re catching a glimpse of the coastal sea through a tangle of wildflowers—rooted, quite literally, by the shore.

I used acrylic paints, inks and collage. I make my own collage papers by painting on lightweight sheets with layers of professional grade colour. After cutting out shapes with a knife, I glue the pieces onto good-quality paper using archival glue. The painting continues to edges of the paper. Signed on the front.

Supplied unframed, shipped flat-packed in a strong box.

Materials used:

Acrylic paint on acid free paper with hand painted collage
