Room in Manglisi (2023)Oil painting by Zurab Sharvadze

This painting shows the simple room I rented in an old house in the village of Manglisi, Georgia. I came there to visit my teacher, the remarkable Georgian artist Temo Machavariani, who was one of the most important figures in modern Georgian painting and my main mentor.

Temo had invited me to spend some time with him in Manglisi, painting nature together on plein air. We had many wonderful days working outdoors and talking about art, just as we had done many times before in the streets of old Tbilisi and in the countryside.

For several days the weather turned rainy and we could not go outside to paint. During that quiet time I decided to paint the small room where I was staying. The modest furniture, the wooden floor, the colorful carpet on the wall, and the soft light from the windows all created a warm and intimate atmosphere.

My teacher passed away a few years later. Each time I look at this painting, it brings back memories of those days in Manglisi and fills me with nostalgia and deep gratitude for the time I was able to learn from him.
