Rock Ptarmigan or Lagopède Alpin in French. Referred to as the chicken of the snow, by me, the Ptarmigan is a member of the grouse family and lives in the high mountain areas of Eurasia and North America.

This fetching soul is displaying it's winter plumage, bought during the summer sales when such outerwear is at its cheapest.

I was lucky enough to have this Ptarmigan feature in the British Trust of Ornithology's book 'Into the Red,' which is still available to buy, featuring birds on the UK's red list.

The perfect Christmas gift for the snow loving bird watcher in your family.

Materials used:

Acrylic and pencil on a painted book page
