- SHIPPING ON THE RIVER THAMES, LONDON c.1900
Original artwork description
An original oil on linen canvas painted in a traditional style depicting commercial shipping and Thames Sailing Barges on the Thames. Looking upstream towards the then newly constructed Tower Bridge with glimpses of the Norman Tower and St. Paul´s Cathedral in the distance. This area of the River Thames is still referred to as the Lower Pool and before the docks were created further downstream to accommodate larger ships this stretch of the river was busy with shipping.
Of course even those purpose built docks have since gone into decline as mostly working docks with freight/cargo shipping and although some of the earlier architecture is still visible today the river frontage has changed dramatically. Much development has taken place in recent decades and even I can remember when I spent some time on Thames Barges in the 1970s how much of the 19th century river frontage still existed.
This painting is realistic and representational yet has hints of impressionism and retains indications of detail in the brushwork. Supplied ready to hang in a traditional bespoke hand finished frame.
Also available unframed if preferred, please message me for cost adjustment (of around 10%).
This painting will be shipped in a robust wooden box to ensure safe transit.
