I've always been fascinated with Protea flowers. They would arrive in the UK, dried, looking so exotic and captivating. Originally from South Africa, they are named after the Greek God Proteus who could change shape, reflecting the Protea's diverse range of forms. They symbolise strength, transformation and uniqueness. Here we have a bunch bought in Crouch End, North London, juxtaposed against a huge English country David Austin Rose. The colours of apricot, turquoise and pink with orange soothe my spirit. I painted this in a season of learning to rest, drawing my attention to beautiful natural shapes. I hope this brings the viewer the same peace it did for me painting it. The piece is painted with acrylic on canvas board framed in thin grey.
