Rest (2017) is a pastel and acrylic work on paper (49x100 cm) created from life. Zakhar Shevchuk sought to test how far color could be used to model the nude figure while preserving coherence. Rich violets, oranges, and muted greys ripple across the reclining form, echoing the methods of Edgar Degas while adding a contemporary dimension through the use of acrylic.
The result is a study of intimacy and experimentation. The nude is not idealized but rendered with honesty, her form alive with the energy of pastel strokes and the atmospheric quality of layered tones. The work demonstrates Shevchuk’s sensitivity to both tradition and innovation.
As a large-scale pastel, Rest is a rarity within his practice. Though in a private collection, the artist welcomes commissions in this style.
