Resonance (2025) Original Acrylic Painting by Paul Cheng

In this painting, I depict an artist copying a classical work. The inspiration came from my reflection on the idea of an “artistic dialogue”—how we communicate with the great masters across time. There’s something deeply moving about resonating with a work of art created long ago. The original piece in the background serves as a guide, while I reinterpret it through my own perspective, bridging tradition and the present.

I used loose, expressive brushstrokes to preserve the grandeur of the original while emphasizing the painter’s focused demeanor in the foreground. With warm-cool color contrasts, I highlighted the figure, making her stand out from the background. The texture of the canvas and palette was carefully rendered to enhance the realism of the painting process. This “painting within a painting” composition creates a layered and immersive artistic experience.
