Remarkable Road (2002) Photograph by Gary Moger

The Remarkables, New Zealand. 2002.

The world below has disappeared.

Late climb the night before. Camping in the cold. Up before dawn to virtually no visibility on the low ground — just white. Nothing. And then Gary started walking higher.
Step by step the cloud dropped away beneath him, and this is what was waiting. A mountain road curving along the ridge, the crash barriers catching the early light. Below — a perfect, unbroken sea of cloud, the valleys completely swallowed. Above — mountain peaks and nothing but deep blue sky, all the way to the edge of the atmosphere.
This is one of those views that stops you in your tracks. That makes you question whether what you're looking at is real.

Shot on a Leica M6 with Kodak Portra NC film, the image carries the warmth and tonal richness that only analogue photography can offer. All of Gary's work is captured full frame, exactly as the scene appeared. Nothing is cropped, nothing is manipulated. What you see is what was there.

Each print is made entirely by hand in Gary's own studio, on Hahnemühle Bamboo archival paper. Every stage, from camera to finished print, is carried out by Gary himself. Never outsourced. Always personal.
