Reina de Oros (Queen of Pentacles) (2018–2025)

I began this large painting in Berlin in 2018, but I did not finish it then. For several years it remained suspended in my studio. Over time I returned to it in fragments, adding layers, small changes, and quiet reflections. In 2025, it finally reached its completion.

This acrylic painting unfolds like a metaphysical theater where time, conflict, and stillness converge. Framed by deep crimson curtains, a woman sits on a stone bench holding a chessboard on her lap, a symbol of life’s calculated moves, strategic tensions, and the fragile balance between opposing forces. Her gaze is steady, direct, and contemplative, as if questioning the viewer’s own position within this existential game. She becomes both performer and oracle on this symbolic stage.

Behind her, flames consume a distant city on the horizon. Yet across the scorched sky a white dove flies, carrying a golden king chess piece adorned with precious stones. Peace appears here not as something given, but as something fragile and hard-won—a gesture that resists chaos.

At her side, a white poodle rests calmly, a quiet symbol of loyalty and order. Nearby, a glass vase of flowers blooms against the darkness, while red berries emerge from the stone wall, suggesting life’s persistent resistance to decay. These small elements evoke the fragile yet enduring presence of beauty, culture, and art within a turbulent world.

Hidden within the folds of the red curtain, almost like a secret, appears the face of Fyodor Dostoevsky, surrounded by delicate golden jewelry. Chains and precious stones frame his contemplative expression, as if he were both relic and witness, an intellectual conscience woven into the fabric of the stage itself.

In the end, the painting becomes a metaphorical stage of decision. Like the woman, we sit within a moment of history aware of the flames, the tensions, and the uncertain future before us. The world seems caught between calculated moves and irreversible consequences. The silent question remains suspended in the viewer’s gaze: what role will you play in this unfolding game?
