Reflection, Quechee
Francois de Melogue
2024 | Archival pigment print on professional luster fine art paper, 260gsm. | 41 x 61

Dawn at Dewey Pond arrives without wind. The water lies flat, holding the pale blue of the early sky from bank to bank. A hot air balloon drifts low across it, the envelope banded in broad stripes of black, red, orange, yellow, green, and cobalt, the burner gone quiet. The basket hangs just above the waterline, near enough that the reflection locks in with precision: every stripe doubled, every edge clean, the whole structure suspended between the sky above and the sky the water has become.

Farther out, two smaller balloons climb toward the tree line, their shapes loose and soft against the pines. The hills carry the dense growth of summer, a dark ridge running behind the reeds that fringe the far bank. But the water keeps pulling the eye back. The reflection falls downward in the same bold sequence of color, the stripes narrowing as they descend toward the apex of the inverted envelope. Light moves in thin filaments across the metallic surface of the pond. At the center of the frame, where basket meets reflection, the image closes on itself, the two halves nearly touching before the morning disperses them.

About my work
I spent thirty years cooking in farm-to-table kitchens before returning to the camera. My work is held in private collections across the United States and Europe. A traveling exhibition is currently on view at The University of Vermont Medical Center and Burlington City Hall in Vermont, and my photographs were recently included in the 35th Annual Green Mountain Photography Show. I am represented in Vermont by Artisan's Gallery in Waitsfield, ArtHound in Essex, Artists in Residence in Saint Albans, The Emile Gruppe Gallery, and Remarkable Things in Stowe.
