Native red squirrels are now rare in the Uk and numbers are so dangerously low in England that they have become officially endangered. Before grey squirrels where introduced from America they did very well particularly in woodlands and forests. They are doing a little better in Scotland. but need monitoring and separated from any grey squirrels. Grey squirrels carries a virus that is deadly to red squirrels and if greys invade there territory reds will not mate.

Recently red squirrels have been introduced to Tresco, Isles of Scilly and are breeding very well. They have no predators or grey squirrels and so the environment is perfect for them.
