Original oil on canvas
The painting depicts a school of goldfish immersed in deep blue water, painted with broad, visible brushstrokes. The chromatic contrast is striking: the bright, almost incandescent reds of the fish emerge boldly from the cool, choppy background, composed of light blues, deep blues, and lighter touches.
The composition appears "derailed," in the sense of neither orderly nor naturalistic: the fish are not aligned nor do they follow a single direction. Some appear to overlap, others look in different directions, creating a sense of irregular, almost chaotic movement. The large, dark eyes, often emphasized by lighter circles, give the fish an alert, at times restless expression.
The forms are simplified, almost primitive, and the painting is material: one senses the depth of the color and the energy of the gesture. The water is not descriptive but emotional, more akin to a mental space than a real environment. Overall, the painting conveys a sense of restless vitality, as if the school of fish were caught in a moment of tension or sudden change, far from any reassuring balance.
