Ray Guy was a legendary punter in American football, known for his exceptional skills and contributions to the game. He played for the Oakland Raiders from 1973 to 1986 and was the first punter ever inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014. His unique style and ability to change field position made him a standout player, and he is often regarded as one of the greatest punters in NFL history.
In honor of his legacy, the Ray Guy Award was established in 2000 to recognize the top collegiate punter in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The award is presented annually by the Augusta Sports Council and evaluates punters based on various statistics, including net punting average and the percentage of punts placed inside the 20-yard line.
As of 2025, the Ray Guy Award continues to celebrate punting excellence, with a preseason watch list recently announced that includes top punters from across the country.
