The small café on the corner smelled of roasted coffee beans and melting wax. Candles flickered on wooden tables, their soft glow reflecting in the rain-streaked windows. Outside, the cobbled street shimmered under the downpour, puddles catching the light from old gas lamps. Across the way, the church bell tolled the hour, its deep chime rolling through the misty air.
