The title comes from a book by the artist Philip Guston about the private strategies artists employ to create their work. The application here is also that the under paintings in this work are quite different to the final form; partly chaotic and only showing through in some places and very unlike the final composition. Hence the private strategy is not only through the building of the painting but in the form itself.
