Pink Lakes of Ukraine is a vibrant and meaningful watercolor painting inspired by the surreal beauty of Sivash Bay’s pink lakes in the Kherson Region of southern Ukraine. The artwork captures the distinctive rose-colored waters of Lemurian Lake and Henyches’ke Lake, rich in salt and minerals, whose natural hues result from microalgae and high salinity. These rare, otherworldly landscapes are among the country’s most remarkable natural wonders — and a living part of its history.
Steeped in Ukrainian cultural heritage, this lake region once marked the beginning of the Chumaks' Way, a historic trade route from the 16th to 18th centuries. Salt from these lakes was transported across Europe, and to this day, it remains one of only four known sources of beta-carotene salt in the world.
To honor the essence of the place, I incorporated natural salt directly into the painting process, allowing organic textures and crystalline patterns to form — echoing the very material and magic of the lakes themselves.
Pink Lakes of Ukraine was exhibited at the international group show "Places of Power" in Ljubljana, Slovenia in December 2023. And also the artwork had been selected to take part in the international online exhibition “Temporarily Here”, Meta Senses Gallery, 2025
