This art work was made during Russia's war against Ukraine and with the theme of this war. Constant air alarms, explosions, deaths of people and terrible injuries - this is the new reality in which Ukrainians currently live. This work is a reflection on violence and sacrifice.
The work is perceived as a point where gaze, control and self-awareness intersect. The face is almost lost in the dense hatching, but the ears—as anchors of physicality—keep it grounded in reality. The central square with its soft gradient resembles a screen, a window or a scanning field, whilst the circle in the centre resembles a sight or a focal point. One gets the feeling that the viewer is being both observed and measured. The grid reinforces this—it transforms the head into an object of analysis, broken down into segments. There is a cold detachment and almost clinical precision, yet a sense of vulnerability is palpable: the person is reduced to coordinates, to an image within the system. The work speaks of the gaze as an act of power and of the loss of wholeness in the process of fixation.
This work consists of individual sheets of A4 paper, which are glued together with adhesive tape. Along the gluing line, the picture can be bent and folded like an accordion, like a brochure. I am using this opportunity to mail this picture. When you receive this picture, it will be folded like a brochure A4. The picture must be expanded and placed in a graphic frame. This can be easily done by yourself or in any baguette studio.
