Twelve Nobel Prize nominations. Zero wins. History's most elegant injustice.
Paul Valéry refused to collaborate with Vichy when collaboration was the path of least resistance. A poet who chose moral clarity over comfort — that's not a biography, that's a lesson. I had to paint him.
Orange felt right. Not rage, not warning — warmth with an edge. The dark line moves fast, because Valéry's mind moved fast. A bow tie at the bottom, because even in resistance, the man had standards.
Acrylic. Immediate. Precise. The medium he would have chosen had he painted rather than written — though he did both, brilliantly, in Sète where the Mediterranean sharpened everything.
