Pattern Pending (2023)Mixed-media painting by Ali Mackie

33 x 33 x 3.2cm (framed) / 30.5 x 30.5cm (actual image size)

£440

Inspired by the colourful Kalanchoe (Flaming Katy) plants I keep on my kitchen windowsill, Pattern Pending is a semi-representational still-life painting. It is a depiction of the leggy fronds of one of these pot plants that, over the course of a year, grew in curious upward curving ways. The pot depicted at the bottom centre in the paintings, inspired by the work of ceramicist Francesca Kaye, is my own creation, made in the studio of my friend and ceramicist, Frances Mace.

At the heart of the painting is a desire to explore relationships between rich layers of paint (applied using a number of controlled techniques), a myriad of hand-drawn patterns, and carefully considered colours.

The predominant colours found in this painting are blush pink, buttermilk yellow, coral, Payne's grey, vintage turquoise and lilac, with accents of pale olive green, forest green, cobalt blue, cherry red, and neon yellow.

Mixed media on board in lime wood tray frame hand finished (by me) with beeswax.

Materials used:

acrylic paint, graphite pencil and paper
