Artwork description:

This is an original mixed media on gelatin silver print collage by American artist Jerry De La Cruz (b 1948, Denver, CO). The work is 9” high by 11.5” wide and is matted to a framing size of 15” height by 17” width. The subject is a street scene, actually a gathering of US Naval Officers at the 1986 Liberty Weekend Celebration and Tall Ship Parade in New York City. Officers in their dress whites mingle about in clusters with no-one actually facing the viewer. Instead, a young woman in a black sleeveless shirt, dangle earrings and large sunglasses is shown hip high walking by parallel to the viewer. She seems invisible to the Navy crowd. Her head turns to look directly at the viewer and she waves a small American flag. Her attitude seems one of total boredom. Scratched into the upper left of the work is the word “HELP.” The scene crosses several torn gelatin silver prints, further isolating the young woman. The palette is almost all the original gray tones of the several gelatin silver prints with some blue paint added as framing accents. The work is aptly titled “Patriot in Distress.” It is in excellent condition, signed front lower left by the artist and is professionally matted in black matte museum board, ready to frame.
