FLYING BY captures a fleeting moment on the North Norfolk coast - a lone cormorant gliding across an endless sky. Photographed by Katha Wood in 2024, this image invites contemplation and quiet strength. With its subtle palette and powerful symbolism, it’s a gentle meditation on presence, intention, and wild freedom.

Captured on the windswept North Norfolk coast, FLYING BY is a moment suspended in time - a black cormorant soaring with purpose across an endless pale blue sky. I took this photograph while standing on the beach, gazing northward across the North Sea. There's something profoundly freeing in the knowledge that there's no land between that shore and the North Pole - just sky, sea, and space to dream.

The cormorant, often overlooked or misunderstood, has long symbolised abundance. To the fishermen of old, its presence was a promise: fish were near. In this frame, I’m drawn to the bird’s unwavering intent - its silent mission through soft clouds and open air.

FLYING BY is the fourth piece in my 2025 collection DARKNESS & LIGHT, a contemplative body of work reflecting on resilience, presence, and quiet strength in uncertain times.

This digital image is printed directly onto a textured aluminium which does incredible things with the light, enhancing the contrast yet further.
