Palm Trees at Dusk – Hand-Printed Linocut

Palm Trees at Dusk is a hand-printed linocut inspired by a photograph taken in Santa Cruz, California. This piece captures the delicate, nacreous tones of a sunset—soft, glowing, and full of subtle depth. I’m drawn to the gentle hues that appear at dusk and dawn—less dramatic, more dreamy—and I’ve tried to reflect that mood in this work.

Palm trees are a recurring subject in my prints, and here they stand silhouetted against the fading sky. The ocean, almost invisible in these light conditions, is hinted at with a shimmering layer of pearlescent ink, which contrasts beautifully against the matte inks used elsewhere.

This is a reduction linocut: a single piece of lino carved and printed in stages, layer by layer. Each step removes more of the surface, adding a new colour with every pass. Because each print is made entirely by hand, every piece is slightly different—making yours truly one of a kind.

Printed on hand-torn Italian Fabriano Rosaspina paper (21 x 25 cm), the image itself measures 15 x 20 cm. Made with lightfast, water-based inks for long-lasting colour.

Please note: the room setting shown is for illustration only and not to scale.

Materials used:

lino, cutting tools, roller, inks, printing press, paper
