Original abstract artwork, created in brown colours on deep edge canvas stretched on a 38mm wooden frame for a modern look which can be hung on the wall without framing
The installation consists of a square canvas divided in half: the left side is painted with flat brown acrylic; the right side is covered in thick textured mud. On the painted side, names of global majority artists are subtly revealed at the bottom edge, emerging from under the paint. I chose a stretched square canvas to reflect the rigid, structured way in which art history is often framed—neatly confined within Western parameters. By layering it with mud and incorporating African fabric I disrupted this visual hierarchy and let tactile, cultural elements overflow into an area that is typically used for Eurocentric narrative. The canvas becomes a metaphor for the curriculum itself—seemingly balanced, but deeply uneven—and the fabric, with its vibrant patterns and histories, reclaims space for voices that have long been overlooked…
