I have been based in East London since the mid-eighties, working at Bromley by Bow Centre developing community art activities, including a youth art class I ran for ten years. The people and places of east London have become a part of me.
While there are many challenges for families making their homes in Tower Hamlets, people have an openness and creative spirit that would be hard to find elsewhere. I know many families, and their stories, and retell them through the lens of memory in my painting. The work evolves out of this connection with people and places. This painting leads up to my paintings specifically about locations in East London, although the flyover is from the area I worked on a daily basis.
Set against the distant buildings of an estate, the narrative in the painting is about an individual unbalanced and caught in a moment of choice between internal and external motivations.
