South Island, New Zealand. Dawn, 2003. The ground is still frozen.

The tussock grass is white with frost, stiff and silent in the cold air. A low mist drifts across the valley floor, caught between the frozen earth and the first warmth of the day. Beyond it, the Southern Alps — snow on the peaks, the nearer slopes already burning amber as the sun finds them.

I was up before the light. That's the only way to catch a morning like this.
There's a telegraph wire in the frame. I left it there. It's part of the landscape — a reminder that people live and work in this extraordinary place, that this isn't a wilderness untouched but a working valley at the edge of the world.

Shot on a Leica M6 on Kodak film, printed on Hahnemühle Bamboo archival paper. Full frame, never cropped, exactly as it was.

Each print is made entirely by hand in my own studio. Every stage, from camera to finished print, is carried out by me. Never outsourced. Always personal.
