The doomsday clock is a project of the University of Chicago magazine "Bulletin of atomic scientists", started in 1947 by the creators of the first American atomic bomb. Periodically, the cover of the magazine publishes an image of the clock, with the hour and minute hands, showing a few minutes to midnight. The time remaining until midnight symbolizes the tense international situation and progress in the development of nuclear weapons. Midnight itself symbolizes the moment of nuclear cataclysm.
The decision to transfer the arrows is made by the Board of Directors of the magazine with the help of invited experts, including 18 Nobel prize winners.
In 2018, the hands of the clock showed 2 minutes to midnight. In 2020, there are 100 seconds left until midnight. Humanity has never been so close to the Apocalypse.
