Old Stone French house in late Spring (2023) Original Oil Painting by Gav Banns

I was walking in a part of rural France (between Charente and Haute-Vienne), through woodlands and small lanes where I didn't encounter a single soul. The winding path led past this solitary stone house in the middle of nowhere. Its shutters were closed, and the flowering shrubs still maintained some shape, but the property looked to be abandoned. I was taken by the juxtaposition of the trees and light, and imagined the potential of this home far off the beaten track, and wondered who might have lived there over the past couple of centuries.

It is painted in a very traditional impressionist manner on American canvasboard (Fredrix) and has been left to dry for a year before varnishing.
