Old Compton Street (2014) Original Oil Painting by Katharine Rowe

This is a large painting worked up from smaller studies. It is a rainy late afternoon/early evening on Old Compton Street, one of my favourite places in London. As always there are plenty of people around and I wanted to capture that moment of dusk when colours seem so saturated. Blue is the base colour used here with the warm yellows and oranges of the lights and interiors contrasting with the cool undertones. I have used a thick impasto technique. I have also used linseed oil as a medium to give the colours a resonant quality. It is not currently framed, however I could arrange for it to be framed if desired.
