Artwork description:

Three shirts hang from a bedroom mantlepiece, illuminated by a lowering sun.
My original idea for a repeated motif came from the work of two American artists, Jim Dine and Wayne Thiebaud, both of whom use domestic objects as the starting point for some of their work. Shirts, on the one hand, are commonplace items of clothing, and on the other, stand in for the owner, representing his presence (or absence).
These shirts were deliberately left un-ironed; the creases and folds make for much more interesting textures to paint, giving much more variety of light and shade.
This painting is framed with a simple black wooden moulding, with the front edge picked out in silver. The overall size including frame is 74 x 54cm

Materials used:

Highest quality artists' oil paint on cotton canvas.
