Original artwork description:

This abstract is painted in encaustic and is embellished with gold powdered pigment. Encaustic is highly-pigmented pharmaceutical grade beeswax strengthened with damar resin, so that once it has cooled completely, the surface is hard, and, if buffed, becomes shiny. Each layer of color is fused to the previous layer, and here my primary fusing tool is a heat lamp which I hold over the surface, sometimes for a very long period of time, but this allows the colors at deeper levels to rise up and mix or run with the paint on the surface. This process creates interesting alluvia effects, and this painting is part of a series of imagined landscapes on unknown planets, which I call "planetscapes". Clearly this one, with its deep orange, red, maroon, purples is a "hot" planet. The bottom two-thirds is smooth, but I've left some of the wax near the top unfused, although embossed with the gold powdered pigment. This is one of those paintings that takes on an ever-changing appearance as the light changes in the room in which it is hung, sometimes looking dark and mysterious, at other times intensely vivid and . . . . well, golden. It is completely archival, framed in a thin gold canvas floater frame, signed and dated on the back, and ships with a digitally-registered Certificate of Authenticity.
