" Somewhere Between Who I Was and Who I Am" artwork from series " Between Generations"

This painting explores the quiet, often invisible space between different stages of the self — a moment suspended between past and becoming. Two figures sit face to face, mirroring one another like reflections across time. They may be two generations, or two versions of the same person — the one we once were and the one we are still becoming.

Halyna Kirichenko’s work is rooted in the idea that life unfolds through a series of inner transitions shaped by choice, responsibility, and transformation. In today’s fast-changing world, where identities shift and paths are constantly redefined, these moments of pause become essential. They offer a rare opportunity to listen inwardly and confront the questions that define us.

Is who we are today the result of conscious decisions, intuition, or circumstance? Could we have chosen differently? And what do we carry forward from one stage of life into the next?

The figures, dressed in richly patterned garments, evoke memory, continuity, and the emotional inheritance passed between generations. Their facelessness removes individuality, allowing the viewer to step into the scene and recognize their own experience within it.

Balancing intimacy and distance, the painting becomes a contemplative space — a place where time softens, and the dialogue between past and present unfolds in silence.

Kirichenko invites the viewer not to find answers, but to remain within the question.

Series Between Generations

In the series Between Generations, Ukrainian figurative artist Halyna Kirichenko explores family life as a space where personal histories, values, and life choices are quietly formed and passed on. Family is portrayed not only as a social unit, but as an intimate emotional territory shaped by care, responsibility, vulnerability, and love.
Through symbolic figurative scenes, the artist reflects on relationships between parents and children, the continuity of generations, and the invisible threads that connect individual destinies. These works consider how major life decisions, inner transformations, and historical realities are experienced within the family and carried forward across time.

Between Generations invites the viewer into a contemplative dialogue about belonging, memory, and the silent influence of those who came before us.
