The second dark painting in my hydrangea series.
The hydrangeas I paint come from the mountains of northern Bali, where I took several vipassana meditation courses. In this practice, meditators observe "anicca" — a fundamental concept in Buddhism. In Pali, anicca means impermanence: nothing stays still, everything is always changing, arising and passing away.
In the first Midnight painting I set the blue blooms against a near-black ground — and against the dark, the blues burn brighter. In this second one, white joins them: cream and ivory heads beside deep ultramarine and cobalt, on a smoky grey-green background that keeps the whole bouquet glowing.
This artwork is part of the limited series "Balinese Hydrangeas" — 12 works.
Oil on cotton canvas, built with palette knife. The petals are sculpted in thick oil — deep blues, soft sky blues, cream and white, with green leaves below — one of the most textural pieces in the series, the paint rising off the canvas in real peaks. The sides of the canvas are painted in the background color — ready to hang as it is, no frame needed.
The 30 × 30 cm square works on a focused wall: a console, a reading shelf, a hallway niche, a moody corner — or side by side with other small works from the series. The palette pairs with dark walls, grey, navy, brass, linen and warm wood interiors.
